Video 4 of 30: Cover of “Warm Sand” by Tina Dico

Tina Dico is one of the six contemporary songwriters who changed my life (find out who the other five are here). This song is from her In The Red album. I love it because the lyrics are clever, the melody is strong, and the chord progression isn’t predictable. Plus, singing it gives me a great vocal workout! 😉

Video 3 of 30: More Than a Fire (Original Song)

Read about the 30 Days of Videos challenge here.

Today I’m one tenth of the way through the challenge, weighing in with my first original song of the series! This is a new(ish) song, about the sense of relief and freedom that can come with getting out of a bad relationship. Hope ya dig! (N.B. This video features a cute dog.)

“More Than a Fire”

Now that you’re gone, I can see the light
Dawn is breaking on this lonely night
I tried to do what I thought was right
But I give up the fight

Been holding my breath for far too long
But now I can feel the air in my lungs
It seemed like we sang the same sweet song
But my heart led me on
What feels right can be wrong

I’m not saying that I don’t believe in love and hope and “meant-to-be”s
But sometimes the thing you fear is the thing that sets you free

CHORUS:
Look at the sky, the colour’s coming back
I feel the sun shining through the cracks
I guess love is more than a fire
For a flame will not sustain
It’s bound to burn out

Falling is easy, but the landing hurts
When you’re lying facedown in the stones and the dirt
It’s hard to admit that every heartfelt word
Was just empty reverb
That my heart just misheard

I’m not saying that I don’t believe in love and hope and “meant-to-be”s
But sometimes the thing you fear is the thing that sets you free

Word-Loving Wednesday: Mawkish

6534684403_f69b497f7f

On Wednesdays, I show some love to relatively unknown, underused or under-appreciated words. This week’s word is:

Mawkish

(Adjective)

Definition(s):
– Sentimental in a feeble or sickly way
– Having a faint sickly flavour
Example: His songs are rather mawkish.
Pronunciation: mawk-ish

I think I’m definitely guilty of being a little mawkish at times. Perhaps that’s why I’m drawn to this word! It’s not a work I recall having heard in general conversation before, so I think it’s only fair we give it some attention. After all, it has a very specific meaning, and thus could be a very useful word to have in our vocabulary!

Will you join me in attempting to use the word “mawkish” in conversation at least once this week? Be sure to report back here regarding the context in which you used it! And if you’d like to nominate a word for Word-Loving Wednesday, simply post it in the comments section below!

Video 2 of 30: Cover of “The Road” by Jackson Browne

As with James Taylor, Jackson Browne also features in my “Six Classic Songwriters Who Changed My Life“ post. I love his songs and voice so much that there are times when I don’t want to listen to anyone else. This particular song is from the Running On Empty album.
