Video 13 of 30: Just Sleeping (Original)

Read about the 30 Days of Videos challenge here.

This song is the fourth track on my album, Atlases & Astronauts. I wrote it for a close friend of mine who sadly passed away at a young age. It was my way of working through some unresolved grief.

“Just Sleeping”

All rise to sing a song that brings comfort to us all
But I feel the cold coming from these four walls
And people talk, they say that you are not that far
But how can they claim to know where you are?

CHORUS:
So tell me you’re awake
Or tell me you’re just sleeping now
Sit up and break the silence somehow

Your little sister, she gets more beautiful each day
You’d be so proud if you were here today
And I often think that I should have been the one
But I guess God knows when we’ve had our run

CHORUS

It’s almost February, and then I’ll say,
“Happy birthday, you’d be twenty today”

CHORUS

Video 12 of 30: Cover of “But You Know I Love You” by Alison Krauss & Union Station

It’s Cuan’s birthday tomorrow, and I have a cake to make, so I’m not going to spend too much time talking about this song! Suffice it to say that I love it, and I love Alison Krauss. Hope you enjoy my take on this brilliant tune! 🙂

Video 11 of 30: Ladder (Original Song)

Read about the 30 Days of Videos challenge here.

I wrote this song in 2011 as part of the “Songs of June” challenge. It’s my favourite of all the songs I’ve written. It came to me so quickly and so easily that I felt as though I’d been handed a present that I just had to unwrap. Few things are more exciting to me than writing a song that I simply had to show up and receive.

“Ladder”
Girl, you can talk, but do you even know

How each word that you speak just goes to show
How broken you are, how broken you feel
And how long that you’ve waited in vain to be healed?

And you stand with your scars
But I know underneath all the bitterness there’s a broken heart
That longs to be loved, and longs to be free
And says, “Someone save me

And give me a ladder with steps to the sky
Or buy me some bricks and I’ll build ’em up high
‘Cause I’m tired of fighting here
And show me the road, that leads to the place
Where the weary have smiles and not tears on their face
‘Cause that’s where I want to be
That’s where I want to be.”

You keep building bridges, then watching ’em burn
Both too scared to commit and to be alone
And the skeletons lie at the back of your mind
And remind you of all you had planned for your life

And you wish you could change, but you think it’s too late
Think you’ve lived too long to start again
And you’re living proof that time doesn’t heal
Only love can make forgiveness real

You don’t need a ladder with steps to the sky
And you can buy bricks, try to build ’em up high
But you won’t get to where you wanna be
I’ll show you the road that leads to the place
Where the weary have smiles and not tears on their face
‘Cause that’s where I’m gonna be
That’s where I’m gonna be

I know your burdened, and I know your life
Has been less about living than trying to survive
But it’s time to let go of each sorry excuse
‘Cause the life that you lead is the life that you choose

So come down from your ladder, down to the street
The thing that you’re after begins with belief
Only faith will bring relief
And there’s only one road that leads to the place
Where the weary have smiles and not tears on their face
Come, walk it with me
Come and walk it with me.

Word-Loving Wednesday: Redolent

6534684403_f69b497f7f

On Wednesdays, I show some love to relatively unknown, underused or under-appreciated words. This week’s word is:

Redolent

(Adjective)

Definition(s):
– Strongly reminiscent or suggestive (of something)
– Strongly smelling of something
– Fragrant
Example: The room was redolent of old, rotting flowers.
Pronunciation: RED-oh-lent

I don’t think I’ve never heard this word before, but I think it’s fantastic! I reckon it would be really useful for building atmosphere in a story or poem (or any piece of writing, really). Maybe it could even work in a song? Challenge accepted! (Maybe.)

Will you join me in attempting to use the word “redolent” at least once this week? Be sure to report back here regarding the context in which you used it! And if you’d like to nominate a word for Word-Loving Wednesday, simply post it in the comments section below!

Video 10 of 30: Cover of “When You Come Back Down” by Nickel Creek

Read about the 30 Days of Videos challenge here.

I’m officially one third of the way through this challenge. Hurrah! I’m really enjoying it, and plan to continue posting regular videos even after the challenge is up. Today’s song is by one of my favourite bands, Nickel Creek. I’ve been meaning to post a cover of it for like, two years, so I am glad to have finally done it! Hope you enjoy it!
